Diamond Muay Thai Gym – Koh Phangan, Thailand
Thailand Muay Thai Training Camp on Koh Phangan Island
Diamond Muay Thai has been exactly what I was hoping for in a gym during my stay on the relaxed island of Koh Phangan. The general atmosphere is laid back, but the trainers are there to push you when you need it. Everyone is super friendly and the owners Mon and Simon have been super helpful, friendly, and accommodating in every way possible.
The gym has got everything you need for a solid training session including plenty of heavy bags, boxing gloves, tire bags, mirrors, weights, pull up bars and more. All the trainers are great and focus on making your technique better whether you’re a beginner or a more advanced fighter. For instance, Mon is the head trainer and he will thoroughly break down your technique from the ground up and make you feel like a complete beginner again. It’s great to have such detailed technical advice, but it can be frustrating when you aren’t getting the hang of it. Either way, it’s better than a trainer just yelling “more powa” every single round!
You can check out a tour of Diamond Muay Thai below:
One Session a day = 400 baht
Two Sessions a day = 500 baht
10 x Sessions = 3,000 baht
Weekly (1 Session Daily) = 2,000 baht
Weekly (2 Sessions Daily) = 3,000 baht
1 month (1 Session Daily) = 6,000 baht
1 month (unlimited) = 10,000 baht
One Session = 700 baht
Training sessions are held twice a day Monday through Saturday, 8-10am and 4-6pm, with Sunday being a rest day. If you’d like to train at different hours, or on a Sunday, the trainers are available for privates.
Daily Training Routine
Most days the training routine you’ll go through is as follows:
Skip Rope (15 minutes)
Wrap Hands & Stretch
Shadowbox (2 rounds)
Pad Work (3 – 5 rounds)
Heavy Bag (2-3 rounds)
Clinching or light sparring
Abs or burnout drills
Some days you’ll do bag work before pad work depending on the trainer/fighter ratio. You can also do your fair share of sparring and skip pad work all together depending on the day.
You’ll also find some badass weights made from water bottles filled with concrete, which makes you feel pretty badass when you do some lifting. There are also sit up benches, pull-ups bars, dumbbells and gymnastic rings to mess around with if you want to add some additional strength and conditioning to your routine.
Address and Directions
Diamond Muay Thai, 145/8 Moo 1, Nai Wok, Koh Phangan, Surat Thani, Thailand, 84280
Koh Phangan is a pretty small island and it’s pretty hard to get lost. Diamond is about 5 minutes from the pier at Thongsala and located near plenty of accommodations, restaurants, massage parlors and everything else you could need during your stay.
If you want to stay on the gym premises, Diamond offers small bungalow huts with basic amenities such as a single bed, fan, shower and internet. It’s very basic living but is all you need if you plan on training twice a day and want to save some money too. They also have team meals right behind the gym that a sweet Thai lady cooks and it’s very cheap and delicious. For unlimited training, food and stay for a month it’s 17,000 baht.
Besides staying at the gym, you’ll be able to find a wide variety of places to stay depending on your budget. If you are on the lower end of the spectrum, you can stay at other basic bungalows for as little as 300 baht a day or even 2500 baht per month. If you wanted to have more of a comfortable stay with A/C and other luxuries, you can find mid-range bungalows or even small houses from anywhere between 500 baht – 1500 baht a night. Your best bet is to rent a motorbike or car (or take a taxi) and drive around the island to find a good deal… you should have plenty of options after a days worth of searching.
I currently stay at Siam Healing Center for 13,000 baht a month, and it’s been the best accommodation I’ve had since I’ve been in Thailand. You can check it out here:
